SFI MediaFutures Director and Founder Prof. Christoph Trattner has published a new opinion piece in Khrono titled “Høyere utdanning er ikke et sidespor i forskningspolitikken” (“Higher education is not a side track in research policy”).

In the article, Trattner responds to the ongoing debate about the next Norwegian long-term plan for research and higher education, and the government’s ambition to orient the plan more strongly towards research and innovation.

Trattner argues that research-based innovation cannot be separated from higher education. Innovation depends not only on projects, technology and funding instruments, but also on students, PhD candidates, researchers, teachers, professional networks and long-term institutional competence.

Drawing on experiences from SFI MediaFutures, the article highlights how centres for research-based innovation build more than research outputs. They create people, partnerships, trust, infrastructure and competence that help carry knowledge into society and industry.

The piece also connects to a broader discussion about how Norway can preserve the value created through major research centres after centre funding periods come to an end.
