Professor Luciano Floridi was officially appointed honorary doctor at the University of Bergen following a nomination initiated by MediaFutures. As part of the occasion, he visited UiB on 20–21 May, delivering a public lecture and leading a workshop on AI and social futures.
Professor Luciano Floridi is one of the world’s leading scholars in information ethics and a key international advisor to MediaFutures. Through his role on the MediaFutures International Advisory Committee, he actively contributes to shaping the centre’s research agenda on responsible media technologies and AI-driven innovation, strengthening the bridge between cutting-edge research, industry needs, and societal values.

The honorary doctorate was formally conferred during a ceremony at the University Aula on 21 May 2026.
The day before, Professor Floridi gave a public lecture at the University of Bergen, drawing on his foundational contributions to information ethics, the philosophy of AI, and digital society. The lecture, titled What is the Impact of AI on Democracy?, explored how AI could help to solve the current crisis of democracy.

Following the lecture, Professor Floridi visited Infomedia’s campus at Media City Bergen, where he was the main guest at a workshop on AI and social futures. The workshop opened with an introduction by MediaFutures Innovation Coordinator Christopher Senf, followed by a short presentation from Professor Floridi titled An Academic Challenge.

Participants, divided into small, topic-based groups, discussed topics such as education and teaching methods, work and innovation, research and cognitive skills, and democracy and civic engagement. During the discussions, Professor Floridi visited each group and engaged directly with participants. The session concluded with plenary reports from the group leaders and reflections from Professor Floridi.

The appointment of Professor Floridi further strengthens MediaFutures’ international profile and underlines the University of Bergen’s commitment to advancing responsible and trustworthy media technologies.
