Jan Erik Askildsen is educated as a civil economist from NHH (Norwegian School of Economics) with a doctorate from the same institution. Askildsen is a professor of economics at the University of Bergen, and he was the head of the Department of Economics from 2013 to 2017. Since 2017, Askildsen has been the dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Bergen.
