The University Board of the University of Bergen (UiB) has decided to award ten new honorary doctorates to individuals who have made outstanding and significant contributions to science and the arts. Among the distinguished honorees is Professor Luciano Floridi, one of the world’s leading scholars in information ethics and a key international advisor to MediaFutures – Research Centre for Responsible Media Technology & Innovation.

Professor Floridi is a globally recognised authority on the philosophy of technology, digital society, and artificial intelligence. His pioneering work has introduced influential concepts such as the infosphere and the fourth revolution, which have fundamentally shaped how researchers, policymakers, and industry actors understand the societal implications of digital technologies.

As one of the most cited philosophers worldwide, with over 300 publications, Professor Floridi’s interdisciplinary research has had a profound impact on the development of ethical frameworks for digitalisation. His work is particularly relevant to the media sector, addressing critical challenges such as misinformation, algorithmic bias, data governance, and the responsible use of AI in journalism and digital platforms.

Through his role on the MediaFutures International Advisory Committee, Professor Floridi actively contributes to shaping the centre’s research agenda on responsible media technologies and AI-driven innovation, strengthening the bridge between cutting-edge research, industry needs, and societal values.
The honorary doctorate will be formally conferred at a ceremony in the University Aula on 21 May 2026.
