A new regional initiative dedicated to advancing computational social science across the Nordic countries has been launched: The Nordic Society for Computational Social Science (NoSoCSS).

The society brings together researchers and practitioners working on computational social science and resposible AI in the Nordics. It will promote student mobility, events and education initiatives.

Professor Christoph Trattner, Director of SFI MediaFutures, is a founding board member.

Mission and Focus

NoSoCSS aims to advance Computational Social Science across the Nordic countries by promoting research at the intersection of computational, experimental, social, and behavioural sciences. According to its bylaws, the Society’s core objectives include:

  • increasing the visibility and impact of Nordic CSS research;
  • fostering collaboration and networking among researchers in the region;
  • supporting teaching and training on fundamental and advanced CSS topics;
  • offering guidance for joint research activities and collaborations;
  • ensuring an inclusive environment that supports scholars of all identities and backgrounds;
  • advertising and facilitating CSS-related job opportunities in Nordic institutions;
  • partnering with other organisations engaged in advancing CSS internationally; and
  • coordinating fundraising activities to sustain the Society’s mission.

Membership and Governance

NoSoCSS is a non-profit organisation open to individuals affiliated with Nordic universities, research centres, or companies. Members will have the right to vote, run for the Board, and participate in Society-organised activities.

Why the Social-Computational Link Matters

Technology makes its biggest difference when it’s rooted in social science. This means viewing computer science as a key part of understanding society – not just as a technical field, but as a way to study how people and communities work. Research indicates that a strong sense of ethics and an awareness of the global impact of one’s work are essential in research within computational fields.

That’s why the rise of NoSoCSS is both timely and important. By bringing together computational methods and social science perspectives, NoSoCSS creates a space for innovation shaped by a deep understanding of human behavior, institutions, and communities. In doing so, it helps make sure that technology’s future is not only advanced, but also thoughtful, responsible, and inclusive.
