DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, April 4th\, PhD candidate Khadiga Seddik will have her mid-term evaluation. \nMain supervisor: Erik Knudsen \nCo-Supervisor: Damian Trilling\, Alain Starke (Step-in) \nExternal Evaluator: Sole Pera \n\nTitle: The Influence of News Recommender technology on Shaping Selective Exposure and Sharing. \nAbstract:  \nDespite the benefits the news recommenders provide\, overly personalized news recommendations and too much exposure to like-minded news can pose a threat to democracy by leading to filter bubble\, echo-chambers\, and political polarization. These negative consequences are not given\, but they could depend on conditions and factors under which news recommenders amplify or reduce selective exposure. Many studies argue that news recommenders can be programmed to promote factors that reduce selective exposure because they are programmed by human beings\, and they are dependent on the decisions surrounding the implementation and design of the technology. However\, programming recommender systems to shape selective exposure is not a straightforward task\, as we don’t know which factors the recommenders should be designed to promote\, as well as how the recommenders should promote them. In this research project I investigate the heavily debated consequences of news recommender technologies\, selective exposure and selective of like-minded news. The aim is to shift the scholarly attention from uncovering whether the current recommenders amplify or reduce selective exposure to understanding the conditions under which recommender systems do so\, given that they are designed for that purpose. By doing so\, we shift the responsibility for the democratic implications of recommenders from the technology itself to the decisions surrounding the implementation and design. \nThe project is a part of a larger project\, the NEWSREC project (https://www.newsrec.ai). The main objective of NEWSREC project is to study\, understand\, and assess the precise conditions under which algorithmic news recommenders have positive or negative effects on the democratic role of the news media by focusing on both the input side and the output side of news recommenders.

SUMMARY:Making sense of news audiences and their experiences: Practices and responses to news in the age of datafication
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Final Seminar of our Ph.D Marianne Borchgrevink-Brækhus. \nCommentator: Assistant Professor Joëlle Swart (University of Groningen). \nOn June 18th\, the Department of Information Science and Media Studies organizes a PhD Final Seminar for candidate Marianne Borchgrevink-Brækhus. The Final Seminar takes place toward the end of the PhD period\, when the candidate is a few months away from submitting their thesis. \nCommentator: Joëlle Swart\, University of Groningen. \nTitle: Making sense of news audiences and their experiences: Practices and responses to news in the age of datafication\nThis thesis explores how people relate to news as experience. I ask how news audiences’ experiences can be captured and how these experiences can help provide a more profound understanding of how people relate to news in everyday life. \nHidden practices\nWhile audiences have become increasingly central to journalistic practices and academic discussions about journalism\, the understanding of audiences’ practices and behaviors are paradoxically dominated by professional measures and quantification of user data like clicks\, time spent\, and sales rather than audiences’ own experiences with news. A central aim of this thesis is to explore hidden aspects of people’s news consumption not found in digital traces and thereby advance a phenomenologically grounded understanding of experiences that shape interactions with news. \nTo answer these questions\, I have conducted recurring interviews and media diaries with news audiences\, supplemented with video ethnography and data donations. This empirical material is analyzed through four articles. The first article explicates the overarching term ‘media experience’ as an analytical concept to capture key insights about mediated lives in digital societies. The second article zooms in on the experiences of young adults who do not pay for news and their considerations for not subscribing to digital news subscriptions. The third article critically assesses the metric of ‘time spent’ by analyzing how people navigate when reading news online and how short bursts of news use relate to meaningful experiences. Finally\, the fourth article offers a conceptualization of ‘news experience’ as an analytical lens to understand how people relate to news in everyday life\, empirically grounded in six distinct forms of news experience. \nA holistic approach\nThe thesis highlights the significance of a holistic approach to understanding people’s complex practices and behaviors. Whereas research and news professionals predominantly have made sense of people’s news use through cognitive approaches that highlight agency and intentionality\, this thesis also emphasizes experiential qualities\, which encompasses sensory\, affective\, perceptional\, technological\, and social dimension.

SUMMARY:Political news analysis by YouTubers : Initial results from quantitative processing of a textual corpus
DESCRIPTION:MediaFutures Work Package 1 and The Network for culture\, inequality and democracy (KUD/CID) at Infomedia invite to a public lecture on the topic of alternative political analysis on YouTube\, given by Quentin Gilliotte\, Professeur Junior at Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris\, France) There will be time for a Q&A.     \nThe productions on digital platforms are becoming an increasingly significant source of information. Within this context\, a large number of actors on digital platforms offer analyses and commentary on political current events. Within the Francophone space\, we find video creators such as HugoDécrypte\, Tatiana Ventôse\, Usul\, and Gaspard G. These actors place themselves in opposition to traditional media (television\, radio) : they advocate for an “alternative” way of handling information\, whether in terms of the audience they target\, the topics they cover\, or the formats they use. How do these different actors address political current events? Considering both economic models and political positions\, what topics are mobilized? \nThe communication will proceed in two stages. Firstly\, I will present the method for constructing the corpus of selected channels through data extraction from the YouTube API\, utilizing network analysis tools. Secondly\, I will present a mapping of the topics addressed by these different video creators based on the automated textual analysis of a corpus of 8740 transcribed videos (representing all videos published by the selected actors between January and July 2023) using a topic modeling method (Latent Dirichlet Allocation).

DESCRIPTION:The SV-faculty invites all students and employees at UiB to attend Erik Knudsens presentation about news avoiders in Norway. \nHave you found yourself consciously avoiding news or specific news topics over the past year? For instance\, have you refrained from clicking on stories about the dire situations in Ukraine or Gaza? If so\, you’re not alone. New figures from the Media Survey 2024 reveal that a whopping 34 percent of Norwegians are classified as “news avoiders.” Is it a democratic issue that so many people are dodging the news? Should news avoiders feel guilty? Erik Knudsen doesn’t think so. He discusses his research on people’s selective media consumption and news avoidance\, citing results from the Media Survey 2024 recently presented at the Nordic Media Days. Knudsen will also offer insights from an ongoing MediaFutures study on whether so-called “constructive news” – solution-oriented news that emphasizes hope and possibilities over negativity – could serve as a kind of “antidote” to reduce news avoidance. \nErik Knudsen is an associate professor at the Department of Information and Media Studies and works as work package 1 leader in SFI MediaFutures.

SUMMARY:Trends in news use and avoidance
DESCRIPTION:In times of a rather negative-angled news landscape\, NRK mapped Norwegians’ approach to news\, and news avoidance\, with extra focus on the young readers. With data from NRK’s ​​Youth survey\, Reuters Digital News Report\, Norsk Mediebarometer\, Opinions UNG2024 and more\, we see some new features in how news is consumed – and avoided. \nOn February 16th\, MediaFutures work package 1 is inviting to a lunch seminar on the development of news use and avoidance. \nThe seminar will be held in Norwegian. \nSeminar speaker is Ingvild Hjertaas\, Media Researcher in NRK Analysis / NRK News. Ingvild worked 10 years in Aftenposten as product manager where she also was giving courses in digital tools and content production before she started in NRK in 2017. She has developed a highly effective understanding of what works and engages users online\, and has played a key role in the development and operation of popular services such as quizzes and word games. I will talk about our interdisciplinary work on defining normative diversity for news recommender systems\, challenges for implementation\, and the way forward.  \n\n  \nBI: Sanne Vrijenhoek is a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam and a member of the AI\, Media and Democracy Lab. Her work focuses on translating normative notions of diversity into quantifiable concepts that can be incorporated in news recommender system design.

DESCRIPTION:Özlem Demirkol Tønnesen from the University of Bergenwill give a seminar on June 9th. \nTITLE:  Hidden in Plain Sight: Microcelebrities navigating visibility and surveillance on Twitter\nWHEN: 9 June\, 12:00 – 13:00  \nWHERE: MediaFutures \nABSTRACT: \nOn social media\, microcelebrities and influencers play various roles and hold immense power as “focusers of attention” (Tufekci\, 2013). This project was formed as an intervention to the growing interest these content creators receive in academic research for their ability to guide their audiences towards products and lifestyles they promote\, while the similar effects they may produce when sharing political opinions\, viewpoints and behaviors are neglected. \nThis talk is based on Özlem’s PhD research into Turkish Twitter microcelebrities and how they express antigovernment viewpoints and navigate the tensions between self-expression and self-preservation under an authoritarian regimese. Drawing from an analysis of tweets by 97 microcelebrity accounts in the 3-months leading up to the 2018 Turkish elections\, she discusses how these accounts consider sharing political opinions and news as a duty despite apparent risks and express their thoughts through a narration of everyday life and daily events by formulating a language that is understood by subgroups who are acclimated to the platform culture. \nBIO:  \nÖzlem Demirkol Tønnesen is a postdoctor fellow at the ERC-project PREPARE – Distributed and prepared. A new theory of citizens` public connection networks in the age of datafication. She completed her PhD at the  University of Southampton.

It zooms into the everyday communication in local chat groups\, focusing on the case study of building chat groups in urban neighborhoods from a comparative perspective. Drawing on interviews with building chat group members in Israel and Germany\, we investigate how building communities are co-constructed between platform affordances and user practices\, and how civic norms are negotiated between online and offline communication spaces. We map the uses\, gratifications\, and constraints of the chat groups and their relations with the spatial organization\, informational flows\, and socio-political environment in each community. \nBIO: \nDr. Emilija Gagrčin is a research associate at the University of Mannheim and affiliated with the ERC project PREPARE at the University of Bergen. \nHer research focus is on political media use. In particular\, she is interested in social\, normative\, and infrastructural aspects of digital political communication\, such as on social media and messenger apps. She focuses on norms and competencies necessary for a democratic coexistence in networked societies. \nDr. Emilija Gagrčin is affiliated with the Digital Political Inequality Lab at the University of California in Santa Barbara and the Weizenbaum Panel research group at the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society in Berlin. Contrary to access structures (typically broadband)\, these structures are not regulated beyond competition law. As the media industries grow more and more reliant on these structures\, particularly for content streaming\, the ownership\, regulation\, and data streams of the internet’s backbone remain serious blind spots in media infrastructure research. Helle Sjøvaag has spent the last year mapping these infrastructures for Norway. DESCRIPTION:Ranjana Das\, Professor at the University of Surrey and currently visiting Erasmus fellow at the University of Bergen\, will give a seminar on January 26th. \nTITLE: Public expectations of transparency and accountability in citizens’ councils on data-driven media personalisation: Findings and methodological reflections \nWHEN: 26 Januar\, 12:00 – 13:00 \nWHERE: MediaFutures \nABSTRACT: \n\nThis talk presents findings and reflections across a set of three journal papers which emerged from a rigorous\, three-wave series of qualitative research into public expectations of data-driven media technologies\, conducted across locations in England\, by a team bringing together sociology\, engineering and media practice. Located within the contexts of the AI4ME project\, through a range of carefully chosen scenarios and deliberations around the risks and benefits afforded by data-driven media personalisation technologies\, we paid close attention to citizens’ voices\, as our multi-disciplinary team sought to engage the public on what ‘good’ might look like in the context of media personalisation. We paid particular attention to risks and opportunities\, examining practical use-cases and scenarios\, and our three-wave councils culminated in citizens producing recommendations for practice and policy. In this talk\, I will focus on citizens’ ethical assessment\, critique and improvements proposed on media personalisation methods in relation to benefits\, fairness\, safety\, transparency and accountability\, particularly within the broader contexts of their expectations around algorithms and algorithmic systems. I will conclude with some reflections on our citizens council methodology\, particularly the use of “vignettes” as scenarios as a method of data collection in user-centric algorithm studies\, in terms of their potential in inviting users’ contextual experiences of algorithms but also enabling more normative reflections on what “good” looks like in contemporary datafied societies. \nNote: The talk draws upon three journal papers from the team under review currently\, and results presented should not be circulated further. \nBIO: \nRanjana Das is Professor in Media and Communication\, in the Department of Sociology\, at the University of Surrey. Newsrooms around the world have become centered around dashboards\, overloaded with metrics\, and news work is growingly data-driven. Ongoing research is revealing how analytics and metrics influences journalism culture\, work routines\, news values\, news selection\, among other. However\, beyond gaining knowledge about effects on work process which are reflected in content that consumers of media get\, we need to look deeper into technical insides of audience analytics and metrics\, or infrastructures for utilization of data about audience news use. Accordingly\, notions such as “lost generation” signal how legacy media perceive re-engagement with youth audiences as core to their future existence. In this talk I will first address how the notion of youth as a lost generation serves a strategic function in the media entertainment sector by legitimating actions. I will next report from how we study teens’ media entertainment experiences in the research project “Global Natives? Serving young audiences on global platforms”. By enquiring the media entertainment experiences of youth as constituted by content produced by legacy media and what is often termed “social media entertainment”\, we hope to advance knowledge on youth as a media generation. \nBIO: \nMarika Lüders is a Professor at the Department of Media and Communication\, University of Oslo. She has almost 20 years of experience in researching user/audience experiences\, social media\, global platforms\, and the intersections of the material and experiential levels of digital technologies. In response to this question\, the NewsDNA project aimed at developing an algorithm that uses news diversity as a key driver for personalized news recommendation. To do so\, we combined insights from multiple research disciples: computer sciences (news recommendation systems); communication sciences (conceptualisations of news diversity); law (right to receive information) and computational linguistics (automated content extraction from text). As such\, we hoped to give stakeholders – such as policymakers and news producers – a realistic view on the opportunities and pitfalls of developing a citizen-oriented news recommendation system.   \nBIO: \nDr. Kristin Van Damme is senior researcher in journalism at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences (Research & Development Center Communication\, Media and Design) and project lead of the News Barometer project\, an investigation of youth’s (12-26y) relation with news and disinformation. Additionally\, she is lecturer Journalism at Communication Sciences at Ghent University. She obtained a PhD in journalism studies by studying news use in the transforming news environment.

In this talk\, I will challenge these metaphors and argue that they distract us from a deeper understanding of the underlying\, reinforcing processes. First\, I will discuss the role of recommender systems and other algorithmic systems in news exposure and dissemination\, and under which circumstances the feedback loops they produce can indeed have detrimental consequences for society. Second\, I will discuss feedback loops as they occur between different outlets and domains. This results in the outline a research agenda. I will end on an optimistic note\, though\, and argue how a stronger role of communication science can help developing beneficial tools for our society. \nBIO: \nDamian Trilling is Associate Professor at the Department of Communicaton Science at the University of Amsterdam)\, where he is Co-Director of the Communication in the Digital Society Initiative and member of the program group Political Communication and Journalism. He is also one of the co-founders of the Computational Communication Science Amsterdam Lab. Next to general courses in political communication\, he teaches intensively in the area of Computational Communication Science. His research focuses on the question how news spreads in today’s media landscape and how people follow the news. In particular\, he is interested in reinforcing processes\, such as the question in how far exposure and distribution re-inforce each other\, and how the users and algorithms interact in such processes.

Innovation guards the distribution of financial resources – more investments in technology – and working conditions –more freelance journalists as a flexible workforce. Innovation also works as a distinctive mark of professional status and is at the center of antagonistic labor relations  – e.g. the introduction of robot journalism. \nThe shift from quality discourse to innovation discourse involved a change in the journalistic perception of audiences: from being irrelevant (if not a negative concern) to being main targets. \nAlthough the question of how to reach audiences seems to be still dominant\, news organizations appear to become more open and sensitive towards finding out how to become valuable to audiences\, how to open up their minds\, how to broaden their horizon\, and how to provide them with a quality experience that will enlighten them with reliable information considered worthwhile. \nIn this talk I will answer the question how innovation discourse and quality discourse may meet by focusing on what audiences experience as valuable journalism. I will demonstrate how it crystallized over the years into three key experiences: Learning something new\, Getting recognition and Increasing mutual understanding. \nBIO: Irene Costera Meijer is Professor of Journalism Studies and head of the Journalism Studies section at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She is a world leading journalism and media scholar having recently set the agenda for the audience turn in journalism studies. Her research appeared in many journals and books and focuses on what news users value about journalism.  She also works as a professor II at the Research group for Media Use and Audience Studies of the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at University of Bergen. \nHer research interests focus on audience studies and in particular on the impact of digitalization on changing practices of media consumption\, media experiences and news use. When doing research she often collaborates with media organisations.  This makes it easier to translate scholarly results into relevant suggestions for every day professional practices and vice versa\, understanding the fundamental dilemmas of professional practices and translating these into academic publications. Costera Meijer is also on the editorial board of the academic journals Digital Journalism and Journalism Practice. \n

The video recording is available below. \nWelcome to all! \nTITLE: Are Filter Bubbles Real?\nWHEN: 16 April 2021\, 09:00-10:00. \n \nABSTRACT: The success of political movements that appear to be immune to any factual evidence that contradicts their claims – from the Brexiteers to the ‘alt-right’\, neo-fascist groups supporting Donald Trump – has reinvigorated claims that social media spaces constitute so-called ‘filter bubbles’ or ‘echo chambers’. But while such claims may appear intuitively true to politicians and journalists – who have themselves been accused of living in filter bubbles –\, the evidence that ordinary users experience their everyday social media environments as uniform and homophilous spaces is far more limited. For instance\, a 2016 Pew Center study has shown that only 23% of U.S. users on Facebook and 17% on Twitter now say with confidence that most of their contacts’ views are similar to their own. 20% have changed their minds about a political or social issue because of interactions on social media. Similarly\, large-scale studies of follower and interaction networks on social media show that such networks are often thoroughly interconnected and facilitate the flow of information across boundaries of personal ideology and interest\, except for a few especially hardcore partisan communities. This talk explores the evidence for and against echo chambers and filter bubbles. It moves the present debate beyond a merely anecdotal footing\, and offers a more reliable assessment of this purported threat. \nBIO: Prof. Axel Bruns is a Professor in the Digital Media Research Centre at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane\, Australia\, and a Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society. His books include Are Filter Bubbles Real? (2019) and Gatewatching and News Curation: Journalism\, Social Media\, and the Public Sphere (2018)\, and the edited collections Digitizing Democracy (2019)\, the Routledge Companion to Social Media and Politics (2016)\, and Twitter and Society (2014). His current work focusses on the study of user participation in social media spaces such as Twitter\, and its implications for our understanding of the contemporary public sphere\, drawing especially on innovative new methods for analysing ‘big social data’.
